The SCORE / CitySmart program mission is to provide a plan to address lighting and air conditioning (HVAC) projects. Incentives are based on the amount of peak electricity demand a project saves then paid after a project has been completed.
Energy Manager for HISD Gavin Dillingham, PhD, says the pilot schools, Piney Point and Benavidez Elementary Schools for lighting, and Gregg Elementary School for lighting and air conditioning, collectively will save over 288,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. "This is the equivalent of 25 houses using electricity. We are very excited about the long-term savings the District will realize from our green efforts," says Dillingham.
HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier says, "The HISD Energy Management program is expanding its scope to find savings in several areas. These include construction and renovation, operations and maintenance, energy procurement and renewable energy sources. The program even assesses the little things, such as the number of plugs in an outlet and vending machine energy use. We expect to save nearly 30 percent on energy costs for the project."
An Energy Performance Contracting RFQ has been released for proposals. The project allows the District to replace inefficient lighting, HVAC, and controls which should result in significant energy and cost reductions throughout the District.
All energy performance contracting related to debt service will be paid back through guaranteed energy savings. HISD will continue to work with the CenterPoint SCORE / CitySmart program to identify energy efficiency projects and funding.
