How can HISD schools go green, and save green at the same time?
By participating in a new initiative called the Green School Challenge!
This friendly competition is designed to reduce schools' energy and water consumption, and to increase the amount of single-stream waste recycling.
"We believe that taking simple steps in the way we use our schools will result in significant savings for the district - savings that can be used for purposes other than going toward the utility bill," explained Gavin Dillingham, Ph D, the district's energy manager.
The district is committed to saving energy and resources. Since January of this year, Construction and Facility Services has saved 13.5 million kilowatt hours - enough energy to power 13 elementary schools for an entire summer.
Through special initiatives such as the Green School Challenge and by replacing aging and inefficient equipment, HISD is on target to save close to 14 million kilowatt hours through the end of 2011.
We can all do our part to reduce energy, conserve water and recycle, so help spread the word about the benefits of going green - accept the Green School Challenge today!
More tools and resources will be posted on this page as they become available.
