HISD Earns a Total of $67,655 in Incentives from CenterPoint Energy's 2011 SCORE Program (Schools Conserving Resources)

Construction and Facility Services (CFS) saved 790,924 kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2011 - Enough Energy to power one elementary school for an entire year!

January 6, 2011 - By replacing aging and inefficient HVAC equipment and lighting systems with newer, energy-efficient ones, the district has saved over 790,924 kWh throughout 2011. The installation of this equipment is continuing to save energy at $40,000 per year for the district.

Alcott, Barrick, Benavidez, and Piney Point Elementary Schools, as well as Welch Middle School and Worthing High School have improved energy efficiency through operational upgrades and installation of energy-saving technologies. The district also received an incentive credit for energy efficient installations at the new Herod Elementary School. "Energy efficient operations at all school facilities continue to be a key focus for the district," said HISD's Energy and Sustainability Manager Gavin Dillingham, PhD.

The district is committed to saving energy and resources, through curriculum links, upgrading new construction projects to LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), and by investing in energy efficient retrofit products that save both money and energy. "Construction and Facility Services kicked-off its Green School Challenge this past December. It is a voluntary initiative open to schools district wide that ensures our students participate in saving energy, both at school and at home," said Dillingham. The Green School Challenge (GSC) is a low-cost / no-cost effort to reduce school energy consumption and encourage single-stream recycling.

CFS manages more than 29 million square feet of property, one of the largest real estate portfolios in the country. There are eight LEED properties throughout HISD, with an additional eight in the remainder of 2011 and 2012. For more information, or to track construction progress, visit www.HISDprojects.org.
